  FIGHTING FLU
If you're not strong and healthy, then you can't look after your family - sometimes you have to put yourself first!

Winter is coming and so is an increased risk of influenza. Flu (not to be confused with a bad cold) can be debilitating.

If you're asthmatic or elderly, the flu jab is recommended.

Check out the regional risk of flu on the Beecham Cold and Flu Scale and start taking preventative measures now :
  • know that it's never to late to start boosting the immune system
  • increase A, C and E vitamins (the anti-oxidents),
  • get more sleep
  • eat more vegetables and fruit
  • think about taking any of the herbs which are claimed to boost the immune system, for example, a short-term dose of Echinacea, astragalus, propolis and/or garlic
You can get these natural products on-line from Think Natural (next day despatch and free delivery on orders over £20). They offer an efficient and helpful service and there's 50% off seasonal products at the moment.

cold and Flu councilThe Cold and Flu Council (an independent body sponsored by Beechams) offers six ways to fight back.

If you are suffering, keep warm, stay in bed, drink plenty of fluids and investigate the properties of elderberry syrup(supposedly an anti-viral supplement - tastes nice if nothing else). Medications such as Lemsip and Night Nurse can help alleviate the symptoms and so help you rest but won't cure you.

Mega doses of Vitamin C are controversial but be aware that zinc helps vitamin C be more effective and the tannin in tea weakens it.

Should you see the doctor about your flu symptoms? Check here for advice.

ExpectingFirst Year. Toddler Years

I loved this series of 'What to Expect' books.
What to Expect when you are Expecting,
What to Expect the First Year and
What to Expect : The Toddler Years.

These books answer questions you don't find answered elsewhere and I'd choose these over any other - including UK-specific books.

Children, it has been said, are like a hand grenade thrown into the heart of a marriage. Luisa Dilner talks to childcare guru, Steve Biddulph, who says he can help parents survive the fallout.
Nature's Masterpiece
Libby Purves - on a more serious note - but nonetheless a saving grace for all parents who are 'only human'.

"From bad language and discipline to pets and parties, from nursery tales and one-up-mums to quibbling siblings and marriage maintenance, Purves hits home in this snappy, dip-into book that will draw sighs of relief, giggles of gratitude and a general all-round thank you from any parent on the search for a little support and common sense."
