The challenge of ...
Child Experts and Gurus
Experts? There's a lot of it about!!
|
|
| |
The
real challenge for us parents is that they all say something different - but
the good news is that there will always be someone who believes the same as
you - so trust your instincts and you'll be OK!!

So, what is an
expert?
|
|
| |
Qualifications do not always equate with common sense and a
public profile does not always equate with wisdom.
Is an expert...
- someone who has trained in a particular field?
- someone doing research in a particular area?
- someone who has written a book on a particular topic?
- someone who has decided to become a 'pundit'?
- someone who's responded to a request to be a volunteer or paid 'agony
aunt' on a website.
Whatever definition applies, they are earning a living on and off-line in
connection with what they do and say. Each of them needs a particular 'spin' or
'unique selling point' that makes them different from all the rest. Whether
this spin is good for your kids - or any kids - is for you to decide - but it's
wise not to accept a so-called expert's view 'just because' they or a PR team
present them as such.

The links on these pages will give you some background on the experts -
interviews or biographical details - so you can put them 'in context'. This may
help you make a decision on whether they are right for you.

Where
to find the experts on the web
About.com have created a list of experts writing on the 'big' US parenting
websites or with websites of their own. few are 'home-grown'. Remember -
someone is only an 'expert' because someone else 'decided' they were. Their
advice may or may not be useful or appropriate. And you may find just as much
help and wisdom - maybe more - by asking for help from other mums on the
forums.

Situational Parenting |
|
| |
In
its most basic form, Situational
Parenting is knowing and understanding how to interact with your children
so that win-win situations are the standard rather than the exception.
Situational Parenting details parent behaviors and matches them with
corresponding child readiness levels.
There's a short self-test on the site - worth having a go. Answer honestly
about what you would do (rather than what you think you ought to do!) in any
given situation and you might surprise yourself! Different tests for different
age groups.
