Some new mums long for conversation that isn't related to motherhood; some long
for someone with whom they can share the trials and tribulations.
Most mothers find that their conversation soon wanders off into the realm of
kids sooner or later - my first shock was finding myself discussing the merits
of different kinds of soap powder when my son was a couple of months old. (Me?

There are branches in many areas - check out their website to see if there is
one near you. Most meet weekly or monthly in each others' homes to talk about a
topic or listen to a speaker.

Use the noticeboard at your local library
Put up a card saying you'd like to meet other mums with babies or children the

Set up a reading group.
Invite other women to join a reading circle - you each read the same book and
then have a get-together to share your views.
You might like to make it a specialist group - for example, reading self-help
books about being a mum/parent and coping with children - or the more usual one
of novels.

If you want something more creative to do, what about a
writing group
instead. It might even open the door to earning some cash working from home!
(See the latest issue of our Homeworking
Parents Newsletter)
The Writer's Block Web site is an example of a creative writing group that
publishes new writing and provides links and helpful advice to aspiring
novelists. (Currently off-line but may be back soon).
