Want a domain name?
All the best ones seem to have been taken - or have they? Many domain names are coming back onto the market.

Want to know how many search engines and other websites are linking to your website? Click here.

Or try this: go to AltaVista and type into the search box link:YourSite.com (Leave off the www). This will list the reciprocal links to your web site.

Why is it important to check out the reciprocal links??
The robots say to themselves, "Here is a site that must be popular or why would so many websites SIMILAR to it have the link on their pages?" Remember that only SIMILAR sites with SIMILAR THEMES would probably have a link to your site. They give more importance to this than you submitting your link to them. Wouldn't you?

Don't be a bandwidth hog!

Your homepage should be kept down to a maximum of 55-65k ideally. If the homepage is slow people may not bother to look at the rest of the site. If you can keep each page down to a total of not more than say 70-80k at the most you would find it loads and 'moves along' at a good pace.

Have a close look at what you have on each page .... total up then have a think (and tinker) to see if there's another way you could arrange the layout to keep each page within the ideal range. It's acceptble to have a larger/slower page 'inside' the site ..... but better if you can avoid it.

Once you've got your website set up, you can become an associate of ('affiliated to') other websites and earn commission.

The reward can be based on page impressions (ie someone looked at the page where you pasted the link), click through rate (ie someone clicked on the advertising banner and went through to the advertiser's website), or click through sales ie someone actually bought something from the advertiser's website. There's some clever technology which tracks all this and reports on your website's activity.

But you need to choose your partners wisely - it makes sense to choose only products and services which are linked in some way to the content of your website.

You can sign up with UK companies through a growing number of 'agency' websites. It's FREE to sign-up - there's no committment and your progress (and subsequent earnings) depends entirely on the product you choose and the magnetism of your website!

Magic Button

This was the very first agency I joined. Sadly, they have recently gone into liquidation losing affiliate links for BT, Telewest, Dominos Pizzas and B&Q amongst others.

Commission Junction has just opened shop in the UK and already has over 80 UK-based merchants. They claim to have over 3,5000 worldwide - and you can choose international merchants if that suits the theme of your website.

ValueClick

ValueClick offers rotating banners - like the ones you can see at the top of this page. It's thought that banners are less effective as an advertising medium but ValueClick pay their affiliates per clickthru rather than per purchase.

However, they are a bit more fussy about their affiliates. They tell me that only 20% of applicants are accepted. But then their advertising clients are that bit more upmarket.
