On the web? Contributing to forums? Shopping on-line? Creating your own website?
You're a CYBER-MUM!
How many websites? Lots of up-to-date facts for the
statistically-deprived about the amount of new information being produced each
year. Analysed by the University of California at Berkeley in a 'living
document'.
How fast is your current
connection? Check it out here - just click the
red 'check bandwidth' button.
It's great fun listening to this
software as it pings around the world showing you a graphical map the journey
of your trip around the world as you log on to different websites. Great excuse
for a geography lesson for the kids.
And, although it's American, it can recognise even small market towns so you
can set it up to recognise your own starting point exactly.
You can try it out for free - no charge for the geography lesson.

Error 404
Sometimes when you try to visit a Web site, instead of seeing what you
expected, you see an error code. Some of these codes may be familiar, but there
are a lot that you may have never seen. Here is a list of the most
frequently-seen codes.
The latest email virus can stop you downloading on-line virus scans and will
send out an email from YOU to all your unread emails. How to lose friends
quickly!!
So finally I've been researching paid-for anti-virus scanners -
Norton
seems to be the one that people like and I must admit it was the most efficient
in sending back useful information to infected emailers to help them sort out
their problems without infecting more people
Check out the
Anti-Virus
Centre to find out how to remove the latest email Trojan from your hard
disc and sign up
for their regular security updates.
VIRUSES and SPYWARE
It's the biggest threat to all your precious data, but if you receive a warning
email about a new virus, it's most likely to be a hoax.
If
you are out and about on the internet a lot and like downloading stuff, then
there are two things you should do regularly -
SCAN for viruses and
SCAN for spyware
1. Take a free House
Call from the PC-cillin Doctor.
You can give your PC a check-up while you surf the Web! It may take a while -
so choose a time when call rates are at their lowest and then sit back and be
pleasantly surprised at the site's helpfulness
2. If you discover a virus as a result of your free housecall - don't panic!
Wait until the program has finished searching your hard disc for viruses then
take the action specified
here
3. Steve Gibson's Optout
is no longer available but there's still lots of useful information on the
website about spy-ware.
4. Meanwhile, the nice people at Lavasoft have created an even better program
and it's free - but they'd appreciate a donation.
ActiveScan's free browser-based
tool is a snap to use, and it can find and remove over 55,000 viruses and
Trojan horses. And unlike some rivals, ActiveScan is updated daily. You can
check your entire PC or a specific folder or file, or you can make sure the
latest outbreak hasn't infected your Outlook or Outlook Express in-box.
Ever needed eyes in
the back of your head? Well, now you can have them - with
the
WatchBack gizmo.
The convex mirror attaches to your computer monitor and you get a near 180
degree view of what's going on behind you.
This funky little rear -view mirror has to be the best idea for a cyber mum
ever.

I love Future Publishing! They
held my hand in the days when Amstrad ruled the world and led me byond the
heady world of CP/M into DOS and Windows and now into HTML and the world wide
web. Amstrad is no longer a force to reckon with but Future Publishing still
survives!
Great software Describer
This is a very neat little
program - gives you the ability to attach a note to every file on your PC
describing what it does or what it's for. Invaluable.
You can download and try
it out for free and it only costs $18 (around £12) to
buy
