Safety Alert :
Bunk Bed Danger |
| Please don't let your child into
the top bunk or onto a cabin bed at night until he or she is at least 7 years
old (preferably 12 according to the
Autralian Child Accident Prevention Foundation). Falls from a
top bunk can kill. |
|
Safety Alert :
Venetian Blinds |
| Infants in cots near windows get
tangled in the looped cords while sleeping or playing; and toddlers, trying to
look out of a window, climb on furniture, lose their footing, and get caught in
the window cords. They die a 'silent death' while nearby parents think they are
asleep or playing quietly. |
| Solution : cut the loops of window cords, put on
safety tassels, and move your furniture. |
|
| Safety Aler : Cot mattresses |
| Babies need to be protected from
overheating, reactions to dust mite and possible chemical contaminants in the
mattress itself. |
Solution : the BEST
Cot mattresses

|
| Safety Alert : Cots |
| Children can strangle themselves
between the bars of a cot. |
| Solution : once they get active and start wanting
to climb out, it's time to buy them a bed! |

The Challenge of ...
Keeping 'em Safe
|

Most accidents happen in the home and are PREVENTABLE
 |

The RoSPA
child safety factsheet
answers the question 'Why do children have accidents?'!
 |
|
| |
Once your child becomes mobile, home safety becomes a critical issue. It's
amazing what a crawling baby, an active toddler or a curious child can do in a
split second.
Get down to your child's level and look at the world from their eyes - you'll
see the hazards much more clearly on your hands and knees!
You can child-proof your home with the help of the
Mothercare
home safety pack - it includes a door jammer, fridge lock,
video lock, socket covers, cupboard locks and corner cushions - or click here

Water burns! |
|
| |
Burn and scalds accounted for over 33,000 injuries among the under fives in
1999. If your child is scalded, run cold water (or use cold wet cloth)
over affected skin for AT LEAST ten minutes to keep blistering at bay. Do not
cover with anything fluffy. No ointments. No ice (ice burns, too)! If there are
still blisters after 30 minutes - go to hospital straight away.
Hot drinks are a number one cause of scald injuries among young children (they
love investigating and climbing and will pull over a cup of tea, a tray of
coffee or a kettle via the electrical lead). Never pick up a child when you
have a cigarette or hot drink in your hands.
One in four under fives are scalded by
hot bath water. Within the next year or so, thermostatic
controls will become available to ensure bath water comes out of the tap at no
more than 48 degrees. In the meantime, never run a bath with only hot water -
use a mixer tap or add hot to cold.
