Perfectly safe to eat?
 |
Consumer concern about the food we
eat continues to grow, with increases in the number of food scares fuelling the
fire.
In truth, most of us eat healthily and suffer little, but the increasing use of
pesticides and seemingly "immoral" practices that take place in order
to get food onto the supermarket shelves are indeed worrying.
Vivkie Hird is Director of Sustain, the alliance for better food and farming.
In this book she explains what has happened to the food we put on our plates
and the effects it has not only on our bodies but on the environment and the
rest of the world. |

| Lead
poisoning |
Children are most often poisoned
by lead dust and lead paint in older homes.
Fight lead poisoning with a preventative diet for kids (4-6
mini-meals a day high in iron, calcium and vitamin C and low in fat).

The Challenge of
Nutrition and Food
Safety
|
|
| |
Friends of the Earth say that food safety is not being guaranteed by
government guidelines on testing for pesticides |
|
| |
The warning comes as the Government is expected to publish its latest annual
report on pesticide residues.
FoE say most other EU countries test more food samples than the UK Government.
1998 figures are the latest available for the EU.
- Italy tested more than 8,000
- Germany tested more than 6,000.
- UK tested 732 samples
- Only four EU countries tested fewer than the UK.
Taking such a small number of samples means that the vast majority of food
consumed in the UK is not checked for pesticides. This includes imported food
which may contain residues of pesticides not allowed in the UK.
Bananas have not been tested since 1997 and even then, according to FoE
estimates, fewer than one in every 100 million were checked.
FoE also found that the food types chosen for testing did not properly reflect
most diets. Only bread, milk, potatoes, apples and carrots were tested annually
between 1994 and 1999.

Balanced diet for kids |
|
| |
As a new mum, I found posters from the British Dietetic Association Paediatric
Group invaluable for describing what kinds of food, in what balance and how
much of it my growing toddler should eat. Unfortunately they have little
available over the internet. Stateside websites are full of this kind of useful
information in downloadable format (see Food Pyramids below). You can order

have different needs so there are two pyramids. The pyramids are available in
PDF format for downloading and printed off as posters. The 'over 6' page gives
details of exactly how big one serving of meat, vegetables, etc is supposed to
be. |

as well as food safety. Bright, colourful and worth exploring.

MacDonald's has an
interactive nutrition counter so you can find out about the nutritional content
of McDonald's meals and you can download a detailed ingredients list. It's an
excellent site with lots of interactive fun for kids - but no food safety
information. Hmmm! |

Food Allergies |
|
| |
Food doesn't have to be eaten to cause a reaction. Touching the offending food,
and kissing or touching someone who has recently eaten the food
can be enough to cause a major reaction,

Doctors like to avoid allergy testing as it consists of prick skin tests which
aren't particularly pleasant for children nor 100% accurate, especially for
children under one year old. However, you can find a kinesiologist who can do
'muscle testing' (did you know that you lose strength in your muscles when you
come into contact with items to which you have an intolerance??!). Highly
recommended. |
